Hungary to lay off 10,000-20,000 in public sector

Parliament

The Hungarian government is planning to cut the number of workers employed in the public sector by 20%, which means 10,000-20,000 people could be losing their jobs in the sector, Cabinet Chief János Lázár told Hungarian news portal index.hu yesterday.

The minister said that Hungary is experiencing a labor shortage both inside and outside Budapest, making this a period appropriate for layoffs, the news portal reported. The minister added that background institutions are being immersed into ministries, and with this move many positions will cease to exist.

Lázár has been appointed with the task of reducing bureaucracy in Hungary, as a result of which many jobs will reportedly be eliminated in public administration, along with certain institutions.

The minister added that wage and infrastructural developments are planned in the healthcare sector, rather than layoffs, while the headcount requirement in the education system remains to be seen.
