Hungarian pensioners at risk of poverty among EU’s lowest

In 2017, the proportion of pensioners at risk of poverty in the European Union was estimated to be 14.2%, slightly above the figure of 13.8% in 2016. The proportion of Hungarian pensioners at risk of poverty stood at 9.1% in 2017, one of the lowest rates in the EU. 

EU-wide, the rate has been rising gradually since 2013, when it was 12.6%, the EUʼs statistics office Eurostat reported.

In 2017, Hungaryʼs 9.1% rate was higher only than those of Denmark (8.6%), Slovakia (7.6%), and France (7%). The rate was 10.8% in the Czech Republic, and 13.3% in Poland. Some member states, such as Estonia and Latvia, had rates over 40%.

Individuals are identified as being at risk of poverty if their disposable income, adjusted for the number of people in their household, is less than 60% of the adjusted national median disposable income after social transfers have been taken into account. The figures relate to all persons aged 18 years or over living in private households who are pensioners, Eurostat said.
