Hungarian fruit, vegetable harvest slips half a million tons under record

Hungaryʼs fruit and vegetable farmers harvested about 2.5 million tons of produce this year, some 500,000 less than last yearʼs record harvest, the heads of professional association FruitVeB said at a year-end event yesterday.

The harvest fell due to extreme conditions: Frost, as well as hot and dry weather.

The apple harvest fell to 450,000-480,000 tons from 900,000-920,000 tons and the sour cherry harvest decreased to 62,000-65,000 tons from 85,000-90,000 tons. The apricot harvest reached 20,000 tons, down from 34,000 last year.

The vegetable harvest slipped to about 100,000 tons to 1.7 mln tons. The sweetcorn harvest fell to 470,000-480,000 tons from 570,000 tons last year, in part because of the Russian embargo on European farm products. Farmers harvested 200,000-205,000 tons of watermelon, down from 220,000 tons a year earlier because of the intense heat.
