Hungarian doctors in search of higher salaries abroad
With doctors’ salaries as much as ten times higher in the U.K, Sweden, Norway and Germany, it’s no surprise that skilled medical professionals are leaving Hungary for greener pastures, the Guardian online reported yesterday.
“Every day, for six years, three doctors and two nurses have left Hungary,” János Bélteczki, head of the Hungarian Doctors’ Association said in the report. In an attempt to reduce the mass exodus, the Hungarian government has promised to inject an additional HUF 20 billion towards doctor’s salaries and bonuses.
This, however, counters the latest healthcare reforms aimed at eliminating hospital debts and potentially bringing about the loss of as many as 10,000 jobs within the sector. A survey by Szinapszis revealed that corruption was the main concern preventing doctors working outside of Hungary from returning home.
Set bribes are common practice within the medical profession here and patients seeking speedier treatment can expect to pay dearly for the privilege.
