Hungarian civil servants go on strike
Almost 6,000 civil servants working at local governments went on strike yesterday between 8-10 a.m. at more than 100 settlements across Hungary demanding wage raises, according to Hungarian daily Népszava.
The Workers Union of Hungarian Employees of the Public Sector (MKKSZ) held the strike because they say they have not received any wage raises in the past nine years.
The strike was called for yesterday after negotiations on Friday between the representatives of the union and deputy state secretary László Felkai, who has been appointed by Interior Minister Sándor Pintér, failed.
Erzsébet Boros, head of the MKKSZ, said a 25% pay rise should be granted as a first step in a three-year program. She added that talks with the government would continue in the next two weeks.
