Household expenses of the lowest income segment rises
Municipalities cannot compensate for the elimination of state housing benefits, a recent national survey of 31 municipality decrees carried out by Habitat for Humanity found.
According to the international organization, the central government’s spending on household benefit has decreased from HUF 130 bln to zero in the last nine years, while incentives to buy property have increased; this in turn contributes to the widening of the social gap between the middle class and households with the lowest income
The analysis criticized the practice of municipalities by which, according to Habitat for Humanity, they award benefits to applicants based on subjective criteria. According to the survey, the poorer and larger the household, the more they stand to lose with the introduction of the new benefit system.
Trends are expected to continue given that the prime minister announced the termination of all household aid by 2018.
