House speaker calls Singapore model for Hungary

History

Singapore could be a model for Hungary in many ways, Speaker of Parliament Lászlo Kövér said in Singapore today. Kövér called Singapore a multi-ethnic nation that has established peace and security and seeks to play a stabilising role in Southeast Asia.

Relying on traditionally good relations, Hungary hopes to develop comprehensive cooperation with Singapore while taking into consideration mutual interests, Kövér told his counterpart Halimah Yacob. In line with Hungary’s “Opening to the East” policy, the country “pays keen attention” to the Southeast Asian region and the ASEAN nations, including Singapore, Kövér said.

The Singaporean House speaker expressed interest in regular talks between the two countries' leaders that would encourage further trade and business relations, while President Tony Tan Keng Yam confirmed that Singapore could be gateway for Hungary to Southeast Asia and Hungary could perform the same function for Singaporean firms in Central Europe.

Kövér said Hungary would promote trade with Singapore by every means possible and welcomes Singaporean investors with competitive, qualified labor, an attractive system of state subsidies and a positive investment environment.
