Gov’t could limit energy drink consumption
Lajos Oláh, the MP of opposition Democratic Coalition, sent a letter to Zoltán Balog, Minister of Human Capacities, to find out whether the government was planning to tighten regulations on the retail distribution of energy drinks, or even ban their retail distribution for youth, Hungarian online daily index.hu said yesterday.
Oláh said that American research found that energy drink consumption is related to elevated blood pressure in the age group of 19-40, and noted that Lithuania banned distribution of energy drinks for consumers under the ages of 18 for the first time in the world. State secretary Bence Rétvári, on behalf of Balog, said that lawmakers are currently working on a program dubbed Healthy Hungary 2014-2020, which might put a volume cap on energy drinks, adding that Hungary will investigate the possibility of adopting the Lithuanian example.
