Government to limit ownership of large farmlands

History

The conflict between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and media oligarch Lajos Simicska began with the revision of farmland subsidies, the prime minister said in an interview with government friendly Echo TV last Friday.

The government’s new plan is to establish a land structure in which 80% of the land in Hungary would comprise of small farms, and given that  “some media moguls are owners of large parcels of land”, this amendment has drawn fire from prominent right-wing media owners, Orbán told Echo TV presenter and publicist Zsolt Bayer.

When speaking about his recent fallout with Simicska, the prime minister also touched on the subject of the Fidesz-KDNP coalition’s loss of a media, which had helped Hungarians “distinguish between what’s important and real from what is false or irrelevant”.
