Government scraps M4 funding contract
The Hungarian government yesterday decided at a cabinet meeting to cancel a contract for European Union funding for a planned stretch of the M4 motorway, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.
Construction on the stretch in question was halted in late March following the European Commission raising concerns about suspected cartel activity.
The news agency said that the government also instructed the minister to come up with a proposal for connecting Szolnok, a county seat in central Hungary, with the national motorway network.
Last week Cabinet Chief Jánons Lázár said that the government had ordered National Development Minister Miklós Seszták to recover HUF 22 bln in pre-payments made to the contractors for the project.
MTI noted that the M4 would have been part of a network linking Szolnok and other cities in eastern Hungary with the capital.
