European Commission examining Hungary's ad tax

The European Commission is examining the content of the recently adopted act on taxing media companies in Hungary, Ryan Heath, the spokesman for media Commissioner Neelie Kroes, said on Friday.

Heath said it's still too early to say whether further action can or would be undertaken by the Commission in terms of media freedom. He added that the Commission was concerned about the possible impacts on media freedom from this tax but he could not confirm that any complaints had been received in writing.

The European Publishers Council and the Association of Commercial Television in Europe yesterday that they objected to the new tax and would submit complaints to EU institutions about it.
