Tax office finds Ft 203 bln unpaid taxes in January-August audit

Hungary's National Tax Office (Apeh) completed 178,248 audits in January-August and found that taxpayers had failed to pay Ft 203 billion in taxes, director János Szikora said on Friday.

The unpaid taxes were 46% higher than the audit done in the same period last year, Szikora said. The Apeh collected a combined Ft 116.2 billion in fines and late fees related to the back taxes. Of the Ft 203 billion in back taxes, Apeh has started collecting Ft 148 billion, of which 86% was unpaid VAT.
