Farm ministry calls on local councils to drop land taxes

The Hungarian Agriculture Ministry asked local councils to withdraw the land tax they had levied, the ministry said in a statement on Friday. 

According to the statement, Farm Minister Sándor Fazekas reiterated that he would not support any measure that burdens farmers. According to Hungarian news agency MTI, state secretary István Nagy said at the end of last year that the ministry would initiate an amendment to the tax laws to ban taxing land ownership. He added that this would affect around 2 million people.
