Farmgate prices flat in June

Agricultural producer prices overall remained unchanged in June 2018 compared to June 2017, resulting from an increase of 3.5% in the average price of crop products and a decline of 5.6% in prices of livestock and animal products, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Tuesday.

In June 2018 compared to June 2017, cereal prices were up by 12.7%, while the price of fruit fell by 19.5%. Vegetable prices rose 4.6%, within which potatoes became 34% dearer.

The average price of livestock was down by 7.9% year-on-year, and that of animal products by 0.4%. The price of pigs for slaughter was 18% lower. Egg prices rose by 1.8%.

In January–June 2018, compared to the first half of 2017, agricultural producer prices in total were unchanged, within which the average price of crop products went up by 1.0%, while prices of livestock and animal products fell by 1.7%.

The price of vegetables decreased by 1.7%, while that of fruit went up by 2.8% in the first half. Potato prices were 13% lower.

The price of pigs for slaughter fell by 13% in January-June, year-on-year. Milk became 2.8% and eggs 13% more expensive.

Input prices of agricultural production were 2.3% higher in the first half of 2018, resulting from a 1.9% increase in the price level of intermediate consumption and a 5.5% rise in the price level of agricultural investments.

Animal foodstuff prices increased by 4.2%, while fertilizer prices were 2.1% lower.

The value of the terms of trade (the agricultural producer price index divided by the agricultural input price index) was 97.8%. FarmersĘĽ terms of trade thus deteriorated by 2.2%.

Agricultural producer prices for July 2018 will be published on September 14.
