European electricity prices, Hungary output down

Green Energy

Output of Hungary's natural gas-fueled power plants fell last year as wholesale electricity prices dropped across Europe and imports became cheaper, this morning’s edition of business daily Napi Gazdaság reported.

Output of power plants with at least 50 MW of capacity dropped 13% to 15% year-on-year through October 2013, according to data from the Hungarian Energy Regulatory Authority (MEKH).

Through November of last year, imports accounted for 28.1% of electricity consumed in Hungary, up from 19.2% in 2012, data from transmission system operator Mavir show.

Electricity can be purchased on European markets for €40-43 per MWh at present and prices must be at least €65 per MWh for a gas-fueled power plant to operate profitably, the ‘paper reported.
