EU South Stream talks continue
Speaking from Ankara on Monday night, Russian President Vadimir Putin blamed the EU for his decision to stop construction of the South Stream pipeline, wsj.com reported yesterday. Officials in Brussels are not taking responsibility for the demise of the project and promised to resume talks.
“Gas pipelines in Europe must be built and operated in line with EU legislation,” said Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, the commission spokeswoman on climate change and energy. She also said a meeting between energy ministers involved in South Stream would be held next week to determine how the project could be adapted to conform with EU law. An analyst interviewed by wsj.com said “there’s no other market for Russian gas [other than Europe]”.
