UK-Dutch Unilever has started a Ft 2 billion (€7.7 million) investment to boost production and improve efficiency at its household chemicals and cosmetics plant in Northeast Hungary, Unilever managing director for the CEE region Tracy Rogers said in Nyirbátor on Wednesday, during a visit to the plant by UK ambassador to Hungary Greg Dorey.

The plant’s output will be boosted from an annual 150m units worth €150 million last year to 220m as a result of the investment, though staff numbers remained unchanged, said plant director Francesco Azzara. The expansion will allow the plant to service costumers throughout Europe. He added that Unilever had also invested Ft 2 billion at its base in Nyirbátor in 2003 to make it suitable to supply the Central East European region.

In addition to its plant in Nyirbátor, Unilever has an icecream plant in Veszprém (NW Hungary) and a food plant near Szeged (SE Hungary). The plants had combined revenue of more than Ft 80 billion in 2006, according to the latest available figures. Unilever employs 1,100 people in Hungary.

The UK is the fourth-biggest foreign investor in Hungary, Dorey said, noting that, in addition to Unilever’s investment, British Telecom had recently created 600 workplaces at its service centers in Budapest and Debrecen. Bilateral trade between Hungary and the UK was about Ft 3 billion in 2007, Dorey said. Hungarian exports accounted for the larger part. (MTI-Econews)
