Parliament extends lifetime of Paks nuclear plant

Parliament on Monday approved legislation to extend the operation of the Paks nuclear power plant by 20 years and to build a low disposal facility for low-level nuclear waste nearby. The bill was approved with 339 ayes, 4 nays and 8 abstentions. The four reactors of Hungary's sole nuclear power station in Paks, 100 km south of Budapest, started operation between 1982 and 1987. The original plan of operation was 30 years, which has now been extended by another 20. Paks supplies 40% of Hungary's electricity. Extending the lifespan of the blocks will cost Ft 172.5 billion.
