Hungary completes $33m water quality improvement project

Hungary has completed a $33m project to improve the water quality of the Danube supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank, Rural Development Ministry department head Péter Kovács said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The project included the construction of a nitrogen and phosphorous remover at a waste water treatment plant in the capital and five water retainers in the Danube-Drava National Park, Kovács said. Altogether HUF 5bn of the HUF 6.5bn project went toward investments to improve water quality, while HUF 1.5bn was spend on popularizing the issue of water quality in the region.

The GEF covered $11.5m of the cost of the project and the World Bank lent $8.1m. The Budapest municipal council paid for $11.7m of the cost and the Rural Development Ministry for $1.4m.
