Friesland invests €2 mln to set up new plant in Debrecen, Hungary


The new Debrecen cottage cheese plant of Friesland Foods Hungary was opened yesterday.

Guests of the opening ceremony included the ambassador of the Netherlands to Hungary, the mayor of Debrecen and high ranking officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. To date some €2 million was spent on the project that is part of the Hungarian and regional strategy of Friesland Foods. This strategy is designed to consolidate the activity of the Dutch based milk industry concern in the markets of the region. Due to this investment Debrecen will be able to boast one of the most modern milk processing facilities of Central Europe.

On 22nd, November 2007, Friesland Foods Hungary organized an opening ceremony to open its new cottage cheese plant at the Debrecen factory. This project – representing a value over €2 million – is part of Friesland Foods’s regional development. The resulting milk processing plant in Debrecen will be one of the most modern plants of its kind in Central Europe. Because of new capacities it was necessary to hire 75 new employees in Debrecen. From now the entire Milli product range will be produced in this city. However, the opening of the cottage cheese plant does not yet mark the end of the investments in Hungary of the Dutch based food industry company. Concerning the capacity optimization related investments Friesland Foods spends €10 million on its Hungarian plants, this investment is part of these. This plant will produce fresh dairy products and various milk desserts not only for the Hungarian market but also for other markets in the region.

“The opening of the Debrecen cottage cheese plant marks a major milestone in our re-organization journey on which we embarked upon some two years ago” - Jack Castelein, Managing Director of Friesland Foods Hungary told after cutting the ribbon at the ceremonial opening. Earlier production capacities were scattered across Hungary and Slovakia. The Hungarian subsidiary of this milk industry giant now decided to concentrate these classical dairy product capacities at just one location whereby it could significantly improve the efficiency of production. As part of the process, the logistics system and the supply chain were simplified and the product range was also made more transparent. Following these changes, investments in Debrecen will represent the cornerstones of Friesland’s new regional strategy. “Henceforth the favorite Milli brands of consumers will be produced at a single location, in the Debrecen plant of Friesland and this will also have an impact on product development and quality assurance” – told Péter Szautner, Milli Business Unit Director, Commercial Director of Friesland Foods Hungary.
