Central budget costs of red sludge flood area reconstruction

Recycling

Cleanup and reconstruction following a flood of sludge from a burst reservoir at an alumina plant in northwest Hungary in 2010 has cost the central budget HUF 38.3 billion so far, National Catastrophe Protection Directorate (OKF) spokeswoman Tímea Petróczi told MTI on Friday.

The amount includes HUF 21.7 billion for the cleanup and HUF 14.3 billion for home construction and compensation.

The reservoir at Hungarian alumina maker MAL's plant in Ajka burst in the autumn of 2010, sending a flood of red sludge into nearby villages, killing ten people and damaging hundreds of homes. The event was Hungary's worst ever environmental disaster.
