Carl Zeiss reshuffles Hungarian production

Cheaper workforce has prompted Carl Zeiss Vision to move some of its lens production in Hungary to Mexico, but it will start making silicate-based progressive lenses in the country after a €800,000 investment.

Carl Zeiss is to finish downsizing at its Mátészalka plant (eastern Hungary) by May 2007, which would affect 220 positions, while the new line of silicate-based progressive lenses would give job to only 30 people, chief executive of Carl Zeiss Vision Hungary Kft Ilona Radics told business daily Világgazdaság. The company has Hungarian relationship before it opened its plant for more decades and it acquired ownership in MOM (Hungarian Optical Works CO.) in the 1940’s. Zeiss purchased MOM’s optical lens factory at Mátészalka in 1992, and improved it to be one of the greatest lens factory in central EU. Carl Zeiss Hungary had revenue increased from the start of Ft 345 million (€1.64 million) to Ft 8,43 billion (€30 million) in FY 04/05, and the company targets €27 million revenues and a 50% rise in pre-tax profits in the current business year.
