Austrian investors plan Ft 5 bln biofuel plant in Sarkad
Austrian investors plan to build a Ft 5 billion biodiesel and bioethanol plant at the site of a former sugar refinery in the Sarkad industrial park in southeast Hungary, Andreas Beer, one of the investors, and Sarkad mayor Imre Tóth told a press conference on Friday.
BIO-MA Kft, majority-owned by Austrian company BIO-MA and minority-owned by Beer, plans to carry out the project in several steps, first building a biodiesel and bioethanol plant, then constructing a small biofuel power station, Beer said. Work on the plant will start in just a few weeks, and within a year the plant will already employ 80 workers. The plant will require an annual 100,000 tons of maize, rape seed and sunflower seed, and amount Tóth said local farmers could produce on an area of 35,000-40,000 hectares.
Zoltán Varga, of the local County Development Council, noted that many biodiesel and bioethanol plants are being planned in Békés County, but the first ones to ensure farmers can deliver the required crops will ensure their long-term operation.
