Increased compensation to poultry farmers

The government increased compensation to poultry farmers by Ft 1 billion to cover losses suffered as a result of the bird flu epidemic, government spokeswoman Emese Danks announced yesterday.
The compensation fund now totals Ft 2.5 billion, and the scope of farmers eligible to receive it was expanded after the EU has approved a Hungarian proposal to extend the eligibility period until August 2006 and include duck, geese and turkey farmers, said Danks. An additional Ft 500 million will be available for animal feed purchases, she said. The EU will refund half of the Ft 2.5 billion compensation funds. (Econews, Napi Gazdaság)
