Gov’t brushes off speculation Brussels criticized rural development program
The Prime Minister's Office dismissed speculation that the European Commission had criticized Hungary's program for allocating European Union funding for rural development in a statement today.
"In reaction to claims that have come to light in the press, we consider it important to point out that the European Commission did not express criticism, but made professional observations with regard to the Rural Development Program," the PM's office said.
It added that the EC proceeds in exactly the same manner in the case of all member states.
Farm portal agrarszektor.hu said earlier the EC considered Hungary's rural development program "complicated". The EC thinks the plan contains too many planned measures, which puts its implementation at risk, according to the portal.
The PM's office said talks on the program with EC officials were continuing at an "intense" pace and the government aimed to close them successfully as soon as possible.
"If necessary, the Office of the Prime Minister will not wait for the official approval of the rural development program, but could call some tenders before that, even at national risk," the statement said.
