Defense Ministry looks to make extra case selling old Soviet aircraft

Initiatives

Hungary Defense Ministry hopes to raise several billion forints from the sale of old Soviet-made fighter aircraft, parts and renovated radars, Defense Minister Csaba Hende said in a program on public television early Tuesday.

The ministry recently put up for sale eight MIG-29 fighter aircraft and received eight offers, but none of them were valid, Hende said. The ministry did sell 20 aircraft engines, he added.

The ministry needs the extra revenue because its fiscal support is "so modest that we are just brushing the edge of the endurable", he said.

The US Congress is expected to decide in the coming weeks or months whether Hungary will get 30 renovated helicopters free of charge. The helicopters cost about $5m apiece, he added.
