Hungary to build another nuclear power plant
To avoid having electricity become more expensive, Hungary plans to build another nuclear power plant.
After the year 2020, Hungary will need another nuclear power plant, reports Hungarian daily newspaper Népszabadság on Wednesday, citing sources at the Hungarian Ministry of Economy. State Secretary Balázs Felsmann told the newspaper that, even though there are alternatives - such as importing electricity or using fossil fuels - they would make electricity significantly more expensive for users and place an emphasis on problems of a different kind.
Both the coalition in power and opposition parties are expected to support the new nuclear program and the parliament is expected to greenlight the construction of the new nuclear power plant once the plan is actualized, the newspaper speculates. Hungary’s sole nuclear power plant, located in Paks, 100 kilometers south of Budapest, is the only operational nuclear plant in the country. Its four reactors produce more than 40% of Hungary’s electricity. (javno.com)
