Debrecen railway station to receive HUF 21 bln facelift
The city council of Debrecen and the National Infrastructure Development Company (NIF) signed an agreement Wednesday on the renovation of the cityʼs main railway station, as part of a HUF 21 billion intermodal development co-funded by the European Union, Hungarian news agency MTI reported this morning.
Debrecen Mayor László Papp said the development will create an intermodal passenger transport hub linking the railway and bus networks. The 20,000 square-meter bus station will be moved underground, while main road no. 4 will also be linked with the intermodal center underground, he added.
Construction work is scheduled to start next spring, with the new main railway station expected to open in 2019, NIF CEO Róbert Attila Nagy said.
László Tasó, state secretary at the Ministry of National Development, said the Debrecen development is the second intermodal transport investment in Hungary after another in Kelenföld in the south of the capital, while preparations have also begun for similar developments in Nyíregyháza, Kaposvár, Miskolc, Tatabánya, Eger and Székesfehérvár.
Tasó noted that in the second phase of the development of Debrecen Airport next year, a new landing system will be established for HUF 1.2 bln.
