Hungary's National Consumer Protection Authority (NFH) levied fines of approximately HUF 711 mln for violations last year, some HUF 230 mln less than in the preceding year, Hungarian economic daily Napi Gazdaság reported this morning.

According to authority chief director István Szente, NFH handled almost 43,000 cases last year with most of them, over 25,000, being in the retail sector. The chief added that the authority also handled some 10,000 market oversight cases and approximately 7,000 utilities cases.

A total of 104,000 complaints were issued with the authority last year, approximately 40,000 more than in the preceding year, however, many of these “were only seeking information”, the paper said. Szente added that the number complaints requiring intervention has been on the decline.
