Changes made to road toll system

History

The Hungarian government today announced a number of changes to the new road toll and county motorway vignette system, following Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's promise to investigate the issue in January in response to public opposition to the system.

The changes were announced by state secretary János Fónagy, who said that changes were made after consultations with interest groups and following the agreement of all parties involved that the introduction of the county vignette system was an appropriate measure.

The most important changes include the following: county vignettes will be valid until the first exit ramp in the neighboring county; some stretches of motorway, such as bridges spanning the Danube and a section that runs to Liszt Ferenc International Airport may be used free of charge; families with four or more children as well as the physically disabled will be eligible for compensation for purchasing vignettes.

The government also decided to abandon the administrative fee during a two-month grace period at the start of this year; a fee which would have to be paid by motorists who failed to purchase vignettes.

In line with the new regulation, county vignettes that allow motorists to use motorways can be obtained at a cost of HUF 5,000 per county per year. Vignettes valid for the entire country are still available for purchase for periods of 10 days, one month or a year.

The “fine-tuned” changes will come into effect on February 1. The government expects the changes to the vignette system to generate approximately HUF 20 bln in additional budgetary revenue.
