Bill lays legal groundwork for utilities to leave regulated market

Competition

Proposed legislation submitted by ruling Fidesz MP György Balla to the Hungarian Parliament would establish the legal framework for utilities companies to cease services on the regulated market, Hungarian news agency MTI reported yesterday.

Balla told Parliamentʼs economy committee yesterday that the legislation would support the recently established state-owned utilities company. Utilities companies classified as "universal service providers" – energy suppliers that use a price structure and level controlled by the state, and supply households or other users of limited volumes – would be under no obligation to cease their activities in the segment, Balla said.
