Hungary's wheat output down 13.4% to 4.4 mln tons this year

Hungary harvested 4.4 million metric tons of wheat this year, 14% less than the 5.1 million tons harvested in 2005, the nation's statistics office said. The harvest this year was higher than the average of 3.7 million tons between 2001 and 2005, the Budapest-based office said in an e-mailed statement today. The harvested area fell 4.7% this year. The country's barley output dropped 9.2% to 1.1 million tons, the office said. Hungary harvested a total of 6.2 million tons of cereals this year, it added. Hungary expected to harvest 8.2 million tons of maize this year, MTI newswire reported Sept. 15, citing Fülöp Benedek, the Agriculture Ministry's state secretary. (Bloomberg, Mti)
