Weather

Preliminary claims by policy holders on damages resulting from a severe storm that swept through Hungary last Sunday could amount to close to HUF 600 million, the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies (MABISZ) told state news wire MTI Thursday.

Temperatures in Hungary plummeted last Sunday from highs of 39-40 degrees Centigrade to just 20 C, as severe storms rocked Budapest and eastern Hungary. Dozens of houses and public institutions were damaged, according to reports.

MABISZ put the number of claims submitted by noon on Wednesday at 8,000.

Békés County in the southeast was the worst-affected region, with the number of claims from that area exceeding 1,600.

Between 2010 and 2016, Hungarian insurance companies paid out more than HUF 25 billion in compensation for damage caused by lightning alone, MTI noted.
