U.S.-owned Universal Leaf Tobacco Magyarország bought 1,772 tonnes of tobacco last year from local growers, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The total purchase volume came to 800 tonnes less than the contracted volume as local growers were challenged by drought and "unmanageable" energy costs, the company's agronomics director told MTI on Wednesday.

Tibor Fekete said ULT Magyarország had to step in to compensate growers for dearer gas necessary for drying tobacco leaves.

Without that HUF 450 million in support, there would have been no tobacco, he added.
