Italian PM: Hungary is a ‘risk for Europe’

Hungary “building another wall” is a “problem for Europe”, Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said in New York at the Clinton Global Initiative, an event organized by Bill Clinton’s foundation, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.

The prime minister said that those who are concerned about Russia’s influence are making a mistake, as Russia is important to Europe. According to the Italian leader, “the real risk for Europe” is not Russia but “Hungary, which has built another wall”.
By mid-September Hungary had erected a wire fence on the entire length of its border with Serbian in order to stop the influx of people seeking refuge in Europe, and arriving to Hungary through Serbia. The fence, and stricter border laws that came into effect on September 15, made harder for refugees to enter Hungary on the Serbian border, so they have been entering the country through Croatia.
Hungary began extending the Serbian border fence towards Romania and Croatia, in preparation for the modified routes of refugees. Preparations at the Croatian border suggest that Hungary will soon close the Croatian border as well, even though Croatia has promised to continue sending refugees to Hungary.
