A total of 7.9 million tons of ear cereals, 5.1% more than in the previous year, were produced this year on a 0.4% smaller area, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported Thursday in a first reading of data. Yields of all cereals surpassed those in 2015.

The yield of wheat was 20% higher than the average of the previous five years, a yield only exceeded before in 1988, the KSH recalled. Similarly to last year, higher yields can be explained mostly by favorable weather for plants, the report added.

According to KSH data, a 4.9% higher crop of wheat was harvested this year from a 1.1% larger area than a year earlier; the yield was 5,380 kilograms/hectare, the highest in Hungary since 1988.

The harvested area of barley was 5.6% and its production 14% more than in the previous year, which resulted in an 8.0% higher yield, the KSH added.
