Hungary prepared to seal off Romanian border

If “migrants” decide to move through Romania instead of Croatia, Hungary is ready to build a fence on its Romanian border, even “by the next day” if necessary, Hungary’s foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

In an interview with Reuters yesterday, Szijjártó stressed that the southern borders are still “wide open for the influx of Middle-Eastern and African migrants”, and this raises concerns about the future of the Schengen zone and its open border policy. According to the minister, the “influx of migrants” should be stopped at Greeceʼs lengthy sea front border, with the help of tens of thousands of police officers and soldiers from other EU member states.
He noted that if Greece is not ready to be part of the solution for this “tragic situation”, Hungary needs to negotiate with Bulgaria and Macedonia on how best to protect EU and Schengen borders, Reuters reported.
