Hungary's Agricultural Directorate Office (MgSzH) announced Tuesday it expects Hungarian farmers to harvest 8.1 million tons of corn in 2011, according to preliminary figures.

The KSH reported in January that farmers in Hungary had harvested 6.97 million tons of corn in 2010.

Autumn wheat is being grown on 952,000 hectares, 59,000 less than a year before. Almost 94%, or 896,000 hectares, have already been harvested, with a yield of 4,238 kilograms per hectare. Yields vary between 3,551 and 4,770 kilograms per hectare in Hungary. About 3.8 million tons have been harvested, MgSzH said.

Corn is grown on 1,224,000 hectares, 145,000 more than a year before. The July 27 estimate shows a 6,622-kilogram yield per hectare.
