Austria says it will reinstate border control
Explaining that her country is overwhelmed by the flow of refugees, Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner (pictured) said today Austria will soon follow Germanyʼs lead and temporarily suspend the Schengen open-borders policy – specifically on the Hungarian frontier, according to reports.
Germany, began controlling its border with Austria yesterday, because, officials said, the mass influx of refugees is becoming difficult to manage, according to reports. Germany said it had to reinstate border controls temporarily, as an emergency measure, and the EC reportedly approved this decision. The move comes one day before a summit in Brussels, where Germany is expected to pressure other countries to agree to help larger numbers of refugees.
According to reports, Austrian officials have already informed the European Commission about their plans to start border controls.
In Hungary, where the non-Schengen border with Serbia has always been controlled, police said that there were more than 5,000 registered unauthorized crossings at that border by noon today.
