MOL, Croatia conflict not affecting governments, U.S. to mediate

History

The continuing conflict between the Croatian government and Hungarian oil and gas company MOL leaves the governments of the two countries unaffected, Hungary’s Croatian ambassador was quoted saying in an interview published by Croatian daily Vecernji List on Saturday.

The past 13 months have seen five negotiations between MOL and Croatia and whenever the Hungarian company raised the issue of discussing strategic matters, Croatia insisted on discussing only company management issues, ambassador Gábor Iván said.

"My impression is the interest in resolving the problems is one-sided," Iván said. On the Croatian side, some are trying to make political capital out of the conflict, even to the detriment of INA's future, he added.

U.S. in the game

Croatia's Economy Minister Ivan Vrdoljak confirmed on Sunday that the United States had offered to help mediate in talks between the Croatian government and Hungary's MOL over Croatian oil and gas company INA, Croatian news agency HINA reported today.

"Yes, we have received the State Department's offer to help us in the mediation of the talks between Croatia and MOL. Every offer of this kind is welcome. The offer has been neither rejected nor accepted, we are currently talking about conditions under which the mediation may be conducted. The government will make the relevant decision," Vrdoljak told national broadcaster HRT.

Vrdoljak added that the government would soon decide on the "possible contents of the mediation and concrete conditions under which Croatia is ready to enter that process," HINA reported.
