Embassy of Hungary in Berlin to host Hotel Corvinus collection

The exhibition, which runs until November 18, features a selection of works from the art collection the hotel has amassed since its opening in 1992, including Hungarian paintings and sculptures.

The Corvinus Collection tracks the continual transformation of the interiors of the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus since its construction. According to the press release, the hotelʼs treatment of the collection, the hotelʼs design details and the quality of materials were "unusual, avant-garde at the time, in the local hotel industry as well as in art collectors’ circles. "

The collectionʼs relation to art history is reflected in its name, making reference to the Renaissance court of King Matthias Corvinus (reigned 1458–1490). At the collectionʼs inception, the hotel acquired a number of classical, traditional works, adding contemporary pieces in the 2000s, which have since become the focal point of the collection.

"Two aspects distinguish the Corvinus Collection from similar corporate collections," claims the press release. "First, the quality of its contemporary works is higher, its composition more conceptual, as the Collection as well as the hotel maintain a close relationship with the art scene. The hotel’s Gallery on the ground level regularly shows contemporary works. Secondly, some of the best pieces of the Collection were specifically designed for the hotel, which acts as a permanent exhibition space. "
