GKI to introduce two new indices

Conferences

Economic research company GKI will begin publishing two new quarterly indices, one of them comparing the competitiveness of Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia, and the other gauging the sentiment of Hungary's business environment.

The VEX and the UX index will measure changes in regional competitiveness and business climate beginning in 2000. According to the VEX index, the competitiveness of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary improved to the same extent between 2000 and 2005, while surpassing that of Poland and Slovenia. However, Hungary's competitiveness started to stagnate at the end of 2005, while that of the Czech republic and Slovakia continued to improve.
The UX index indicates that opinion regarding Hungary's business climate sank to its lowest levels in 2004, right before Hungary joined the EU, and during the summer of 2006, after the Hungarian government announced austerity measures.
