Truck drivers ask EC for compensation on Röszke closure

The Hungarian Road Haulage Association is turning to the European Commission to inquire about compensation for the losses caused by the closure of Hungarian-Serbian border, government-friendly daily Magyar Idők said today.

According to Association head Zoltán Pencz, the closure of border crossings has made delivery times longer. The head added that officials had adopted a policy of leniency with drivers forced to work overtime on the grounds of force majeure.

Border crossings at Röszke were closed yesterday, for a period of 30 days in the “interest of national security”, the Hungarian government announced earlier. Masses of migrants were stuck at the border, outside the Hungarian fence, as stricter border laws taking effect on Tuesday, technically closed the border to refugees.

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.

We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
