Tesco employees prepare for national strike
Labor unions at retail chain Tesco agreed on Monday afternoon that a national strike will take place in all stores across Hungary, according to reports. The date has not yet been made public.
The main cause of conflict between unions and management at Tesco is the latterʼs announcement that they do not plan a salary raise for employees this year. The management has also not provided a clear answer as to whether or not the company is considering layoffs. Instead, Tesco says it would set up working groups to analyze the needs of all stores. The unions see this as a diversion, according to news portal hvg.hu.
Tesco unions have taken the decision to go on strike and have already set the date, although this had not yet been disclosed as of time of writing. Another round of negotiations is set for Wednesday, hvg.hu reported.
According to information published by pro-government daily Magyar Idők, the unions are outraged by statements previously made by Tesco management regarding an imminent settlement between the two sides.
The unions are aiming for a 25% pay rise, which would reportedly entail a further HUF 14 billion in costs for Tesco, and also to expand the headcount by 15%.
