Telenor launches Digital Welfare mobile internet package

Telco Telenor launched a government-initiated internet service package Tuesday tailored for people who are still not online, state news agency MTI reported.

About 18% of the Hungarian population between the ages of 16 and 74 are still not internet users, said MTI. The governmentʼs Digital Welfare Program is targeting this group, aiming to connect them to the net by offering lower than the average market price, it added.

Telenor Hungary CEO Alexandra Reich announced on Tuesday that Telenor is offering such subscribers an affordable service as well as a mobile device with the package.

Telenor is the sixth telco on the Hungarian market to include a Digital Welfare package among its products, but the first to offer a mobile internet package.

MEP Tamás Deutsch, who oversees the Digital Welfare Program, noted that the rate of internet users among the Hungarian population has risen from 72% to 78% over the past 18 months. The increase has occurred concurrent with reductions in the VAT rate on internet services, as well as the launch of the Digital Welfare Program, he added.
