Union protests delay traffic into Budapest
"Single-lane" demonstrations by labor unions caused considerable slowing of traffic on highways entering Budapest this morning. Altogether 13 unions have joined today’s protest against government measures that they say are unfavorable to workers. The protest was organized by LIGA union association leader István Gaskó.
According to the organizer’s website, liganet.hu, demonstration locations include: Budapest, Győr, Tatabánya, Székesfehérvár, Veszprém, Szombathely, Zalaegerszeg, Nagykanizsa, Kaposvár, Pécs, Szekszárd, Paks, Szeged, Hódmezővásárhely, Szolnok, Kecskemét, Békéscsaba, Debrecen, Szolnok, Püspökladány, Eger and Miskolc.
The single-lane demonstrations, in which protestors block a lane of traffic, is to continue on roads around the country between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. today.
The unions are urging the government to withdraw plans on phasing out early retirement and lowering of the tax on food vouchers. Unions say they are also seeking changes to the labor act to ease restrictions on strikes, he added.
