Telenor to have 'several hundred' 5G bases by yearend
Telenor Hungary will have "several hundred" 5G base stations by yearend, CEO Peter Gazik said at an online press conference yesterday, according to napi.hu.
Telenor will launch commercial 5G services in some areas of Budapest from April, and coverage will extend to areas around Lake Balaton by the summer, Gazik said.
At present, Telenor's 5G network is accessible in some areas of Győr (120 km northwest of Budapest) and Törökbálint (15 km southwest), on the outskirts of Budapest, he added. In addition to 5G, Gazik said Telenor would focus this year on developing digital products, including mobile financial services, Internet of Things solutions and value-creating services for customers in cooperation with promising startups.
Mobile internet traffic grew around 30% in 2020, over the 10% increase in call minutes as people talked for longer on calls. Travel restrictions caused disappointing roaming turnover, Gazik said.
He also revealed that Telenor had spent HUF 56.9 bln to extend its spectrum licenses in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands for another 15 years at a frequency auction early in 2021.
At a spectrum auction in 2020, it paid HUF 35.6 bln for spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz bands for the rollout of its 5G network, he added.
