Hungarian TV news: Paramount debuts; Smash Hits coming; ad revenue down in ‘13
Hungary has become the third European nation to air a localized version of the US-based Paramount Channel in a wave of global expansion for distributor Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN). Russia will become the fourth European nation to broadcast the station this week.
The distribution agreement includes affiliate partners Invitel, Magyar Telekom, PR Telekom and Tarr Kft. Base programming on Paramount Channel in Hungary features dubbed Paramount Pictures films but this “will also be expanded to offer contemporary classics from other American film studios and some of the best European movies from the last few decades.”
The Paramount Channel is VIMN’s seventh in the Hungarian market, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, Comedy Central Extra, MTV and VIVA Hungary.
Box Television bringing Smash Hits to Hungary, Europe
UK-based TV distributors Box Television, meanwhile, also announced tertiary market expansion in 2014 in bringing music networks to Tanzania … and Hungary. Magyar Telekom will be distributing the music channel Smash Hits in the country.
While the international station Box Africa is widely distributed on that continent, the introduction of Smash Hits marks Box Television’s first foray into the continental European market in what company management has promised as “the first of a series of European launches planned for this year.”
Advertising revenue down for 2013
Television advertising revenue in Hungary fell 6% to HUF 45.6 billion last year, according to a survey commissioned by the Hungarian Association of Electronic Program Providers (MEME).
The survey, conducted by consultancy Ernst and Young, covered 56 television broadcasters. MEME chairman Krisztián Kovács told national news service MTI that the data suggest the decline in revenue from TV advertising slowed last year, and could come to a halt this year.
