Uber: Blocking new technology is ‘not good directionʼ

In a statement sent to the Budapest Business Journal today, ride-sharing service Uber said that preventing companies from doing business simply because they do not fit in the traditional business framework is “not a good direction”.

The statement came in reaction to the Hungarian Parliament today approving amendments that allow authorities to temporarily block websites or apps running “illegal taxi services”. It appears the law might lead to the operations of Uber being blocked.

“Uber continues to seek dialogue with decision-makers and all other stakeholders to initiate the change of current regulation and make it more suitable for new technologies”, Uber Hungary said in the statement. The objective is compliance, Uber said, adding that its drivers have the necessary licenses and give invoices to clients.

“Uber has been committed to 21st century, innovation-oriented regulation that puts the consumer first. Such regulation would benefit everyone: it would provide riders with a reliable and cashless service, create economic opportunities for thousands and increase tax revenues for the state. Uber is committed to continue to serve its 150k users and 1,200 driver partners in Hungary,” the statement added.
