Hungary slipped four spots to 54th on Transparency International’s 2011 Corruption Perceptions Index ranking, head of TI Hungary Adam Foldes said at a press conference on Thursday.

Hungary’s score on the index - 0 to 10, with 10 being the least corrupt - was 4.6, down from 4.7 in 2010. Two-thirds of the 183 ranked countries scored under 5, TI Hungary said.

"Last year, independent institutions playing a key role in fighting corruption have been jeopardised in Hungary which further deteriorated the country’s perception," Mr Foldes said.

Hungary’s score on the index was over Slovakia’s (4.0), the Czech Republic’s (4.4) and Romania’s (3.6), but under Poland’s (5.5).
